Which organisations does the Royal Devon collaborate with to provide data for research?

Arcturis

The Royal Devon has a partnership with Arcturis, where insights from anonymised patient data are used to help doctors make more accurate diagnoses, select the most effective treatments, and improve patient care.

Who are Arcturis?

Arcturis is a real-world health data company based in Oxford, UK.

Arcturis works in partnership with several NHS organisations, including the Royal Devon, to analyse the real-world data from patient’s electronic health records to help develop and discover new medicines and treatments.

How will this partnership benefit patient care?

Our strategic research agreement with Arcturis helps us to curate deep, enriched real-world data into research-ready datasets that Arcturis can use to identify patterns and insights that have the potential to improve clinical trials, better understand diseases, and accelerate the discovery of new medicines and treatments that will improve the health and care of our communities.

How does Arcturis use patient data?

Through the collaboration, staff at the Royal Devon make clinical data available to Arcturis in a way which helps ensure patient privacy is protected. As a result, The Royal Devon commits to sharing no confidential identifiable patient information with Arcturis.

With pharmaceutical, academic and NHS research clients in the UK and around the world, Arcturis then applies traditional and innovative medical statistics, machine learning and data science approaches to deliver the research findings and insights needed to advance patient treatments and care.

This way of accessing and analysing anonymised clinical data for medical research is called the Arcturis ‘Real World Data Network’.

What processes are in place to protect patient data?

All data requests made by Arcturis through the Real World Data Network follow strict protocols and conditions approved and set by the NHS Health Research Authority (HRA) and the independent body which provides expert advice on the use of confidential patient information known as the Confidentiality Advisory Group (CAG).

Requests are also carefully reviewed by an expert group at the Royal Devon and go through our information governance approval processes, including sign off by the Trust’s Caldicott Guardian

The Royal Devon processes described above regarding the approval of applications and de-identification of data are followed when Arcturis make a data request.
