Current projects
Taw View staff and student residences
As part of Phase One, construction began in March 2026 on urgently needed modern, short-term staff and student accommodation at NDDH. The Taw View residences are funded by £22.7 million from the government's New Hospital Programme, secured through the Our Future Hospital (OFH) programme.
Taw View will play a vital role in attracting and retaining healthcare professionals, supporting recruitment and the retention of skilled staff. The development will provide 120 en-suite bedrooms, including four fully accessible family apartments and six single accessible rooms, with shared kitchen, living and dining spaces, plus a range of amenity spaces.
This project is a key early step in preparing the site for wider redevelopment and supporting the workforce our hospital depends on.
Twin MRI suite
We are fully committed to delivering a new twin MRI suite at NDDH. Seed funding has already been secured to develop the Full Business Case — a formal step in the national approval process and a clear signal that this project is moving forward.
We are now working with the New Hospital Programme to secure the external capital funding needed to build the new facility. Once delivered, the twin MRI suite will increase diagnostic capacity, replace our ageing second scanner, and provide more resilient services with shorter waits and reduced travel for patients.
Improved MRI capacity would mean:
- Faster access to high-quality diagnostics
- Reduced waiting times and travel
- Greater resilience for both routine and urgent scans
This investment builds on the successful opening of the Atlantic MRI and would bring the total number of scanners at NDDH to three.
Other upcoming projects
Several additional projects are also currently taking place on site or are about to begin. Although these are not delivered directly through the OFH Programme, they are essential developments that strengthen our site and support future services.
Expanded Same Day Emergency Care facilities
We are enhancing and expanding our Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) facilities after securing external capital funding from NHS England.
SDEC helps patients receive urgent care without the need for an overnight stay. People referred by their GP or the Accident & Emergency department are seen quickly, with tests such as bloods, x‑rays or scans arranged soon after arrival. Most patients spend just two to four hours in the unit before going home the same day. The team can diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions and provide procedures such as IV antibiotics, wound care, infusions and specialist tests. This modern approach improves patient experience and helps avoid unnecessary hospital admissions.
New Clinical Research Hub
We are creating northern Devon’s first dedicated Clinical Research Hub at NDDH, giving patients access to cutting-edge treatments and trials closer to home, reducing the need to travel long distances.
Supported by £1.4m in funding from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), the hub will sit within a new modular building that will grow into a wider Research and Education Hub in future phases. The hub is expected to more than double research activity and enable many more patients to access NHS and commercial trials - from vaccine studies to research into respiratory, heart and long-term conditions such as lower back pain, joint problems, and osteoarthritis.
Staff will benefit from modern facilities, closer collaboration with Exeter teams and more development opportunities.
High voltage cable installation
As part of our future planning, a new high-voltage electricity cable is being installed on site to ensure the hospital has the power capacity and resilience needed to support future buildings, equipment and services. Without this upgrade, we would be unable to safely meet the electrical demands necessary for future developments to deliver services to our patients.
