Annual vaccine health research
In the UK, vaccines save thousands of lives every year. They are the most effective way to prevent infectious diseases.
Vaccine research is crucial for creating new vaccines to prevent diseases, ensuring they are safe and effective. It protects public health and saves lives by stopping the spread of illnesses. In recent years, vaccine research has led to the development of COVID-19 and RSV vaccines, as well as vaccines that can protect against some forms of cancer.

Who can take part?
Each year, the Royal Devon runs vaccine health research studies, some of which are open to healthy adults, while others may focus on specific health conditions or age groups. We may also run studies that aim to evaluate vaccines for children, such as the HARMONIE trial that showed a vaccine could reduce hospitalisations from RSV in infants.
Is vaccine research safe?
Yes, vaccine studies follow strict regulations, undergo thorough testing, and are closely monitored by health authorities such as the Health Research Authority and Research Ethics Committee. This ensures vaccines meet high safety and effectiveness standards before being approved.
