Our Team Festive Calendar is back!

Following the success of previous years, we are creating another Team Festive Calendar to showcase the amazing teams that make up the Royal Devon. 

On each day throughout December and into the new year, there will be one nominated team from the Royal Devon that will be showcased and celebrated here.

The wonderful Ophthalmology admin team work extremely hard all year round to provide excellent care for Ophthalmology patients. 

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery which deals with eye disorders, including cataracts and glaucoma, as well as emergency eye problems. 

The ophthalmology team consists of ophthalmologists (doctors who specialise in eye disorders), specialist nurses and eye health care professionals, such as orthoptists, optometrists, opticians, and practitioners, plus a great support team of ophthalmic technicians.

Exe Ward Team are amazing. They are committed in the delivery of quality, gold standard, safe, harm free care to our patients. Patients' experience is very important to the team.

Exe Ward is a general surgical ward, specialising in caring for people with vascular (relating to blood vessels) conditions.

Patients are supported by a multidisciplinary team consisting of nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, auxiliary staff, housekeeping and administrators.

The ME/CFS Service are a team of specialist and passionate occupational therapists providing outstanding rehab to patients living with ME/CFS and Long COVID fatigue in the Eastern and Northern areas.

Every patient is offered an holistic assessment and personalised treatment pathway, to support them to live well with their fatigue. The service utilises a compassion focussed and empowering approach.

We facilitate every patient to access the service in a manner that works best for them, be that virtual, telephone, or face to face. Patients have the option of one-to-one support or via our online group programme.

The service promotes self-management, self-compassion, and peer support, and includes onward referrals to services such as a health and wellbeing coach, TalkingHealth, and ActionforME.

Our Community Rehabilitation teams enable patients & carers to maximise their independence and quality of life. We provide personalised treatment programmes so that all people can feel included & participate in their rehab to the best of their ability & potential. We offer virtual, face to face, one to one & group rehab. The teams thrive on creativity, supporting & empowering others.

Urology outpatients relocated to Ottery St Mary as part of the ED expansion in 2021 and since then The Ottery St Mary Team have provided specialist Urology care to hundreds of patients waiting for Urology investigations and procedures. The team work tirelessly to ensure that every patient is treated with care and compassion and create an environment in which they feel safe and happy to revisit for further treatment.

 

Well done to the OSM Team, the difference you have made to patients waiting for treatment is nothing short of amazing and I wish you and your families a very happy Christmas and healthy new year!

Our team became established in June 2022 and we have quickly become an integral part of the patient's journey and staff experience by ensuring best practice and legal compliance.

Our aim is to empower not only the patients to be involved in their care but also staff to feel confident in delivering that care safely.

We are very proud of our accomplishments so far this year and we look forward to achieving great things in the future.

General Theatres offers a wide range of specialist operations within a 24-hour service, we have around 150 theatre and anaesthetic staff, with an additional 50 Recovery Unit staff.


We are a highly skilled, dedicated team of theatre personnel who are committed to providing our patients with a safe, caring and innovative environment. We ensure that all patients have individualised care throughout the perioperative journey, and in doing so we perform around 50 operations a day, however most patients will never see or meet most members of the team due to the nature of the service.

The COVID Testing Team have worked so hard over the last 2 years to provide PCR & LFD tests for both the Trust's patients as well as those via CCG to ensure elective admissions could go ahead. The many changes the team have had to go through they have done so with enthusiasm and professionalism. The team work incredibly well together and support each other to deliver the best possible care for the patients and for this I am very proud of them.

The dermatology team pride themselves on their clinical excellence and motivation to maintain high standards. They are constantly thinking of new ways of working to ensure patients are seen and treated in a timely manner. Regular meetings as a team ensures everyone's voice is heard and to ensure the patients remain at the centre of what we do.

The patient feedback is fantastic which drives and motivates the staff.

It won't come as a surprise that the Infection Prevention and Control Team has had another busy year as the pandemic continues and other work streams return!

The team is proud to provide expertise and support to Royal Devon Eastern Services on the Wonford, Heavitree and NHS Hospital Nightingale Exeter sites and to all our Community Services, Community Hospitals and renal satellites. It also maintains both surgical site and blood stream infection surveillance as part of its mandatory and voluntary surveillance programme, driving improvement work and epidemiological insight.

The team also continues to provide expert services to Devon Partnership Trust and, through the Community Infection Management Service, to care homes, 'housing with support' providers, domiciliary care services and primary care in the Eastern locality.

The team is focused on ensuring our population experiences consistent infection prevention practice, wherever their setting, through an integrated service and that the widest range of health and social care staff feel supported in best practice.

The team meets challenges with energy and good humour, working collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders and partners. Its aim is always to engage and empower staff to implement guidance in a safe and evidence based way, mindful of the importance of putting the patient at the centre of all we do.

Optimistic and energised for the year ahead, the team wishes everyone a happy and infection free Christmas!

This incredible team of Speech and Language Therapists is always going the extra mile to support people with swallowing and communication problems, both in the Community and in our hospitals. They always keep the patient at the heart of what they do with a focus on helping people achieve their own goals around communication and swallowing. They are so supportive of each other and are always smiling even when times are challenging. Our team wish you all a peaceful and fun time over the festive period!

The Practice Education team encompasses 3 vital sub teams that help to support our staff across the Trust.

The Clinical Practice Facilitation team (CPF) - support all post registration staff clinically and pastorally, transition nurses and Newly Qualified staff. The team also run study days and workshops to support staff in Professionalism and prioritisation of care.

The Clinical Learning team- (CLF)- support all nursing student groups, Registered Degree Nurse apprentices and Return to Practice Nurse. The team also support assessors and supervisors in practice and deliver training.

The OSCE team- provide vital training and pastoral support to our transition nurses to obtain the NMC OSCE exam and registration.

The wider team also support in delivering Professional Nurse Advocacy sessions to staff and support staff who may have been registered practitioners in their home countries to obtain their NMC registration.

The Cardiology Admin Team go above and beyond to get our patients the best care possible. They work endlessly to ensure patients are booked based on clinical priority and escalate through PTL any issues to not reach targets. The compassion they show towards their colleagues highlights how well they work as individuals but also as a team, especially when they have pulled together through tough periods of vacancies and absence that we have had within the team this year.

They want to say a massive thank you to both the teams on the acute and community sites, your teamwork makes me proud to be part of this department. Continue being the amazing individuals that you are, and here's to another year of collaborative working.

A Chaplain is for life- not just for Christmas! The team will be busy across sites - engaging in carols and more, and of course supporting patients who will find this a particularly difficult time to be in. We will also be there for all staff, at the end of a phone 24/7 throughout the Christmas period- so if you ever need some advice or to share your burden, please call us via switch and we will be a listening ear.

Our fantastic Knowledge and Library Services have worked so hard this year to align our services across the Northern and Eastern sites. Embracing the many changes that integration involves with enthusiasm, the teams have collaborated on many aspects of our service development, keeping the needs of our users throughout the Trust at the forefront of all that we do.

From new technology to new policies and procedures, the teams are working to make information easy to access for everyone working at the Royal Devon. They have had great fun getting to know each other better this year and the teams are looking forward to more collaboration and innovation as we move into the New Year.

Therapists in Stroke Rehabilitation have worked closely with the Nursing team on Yealm ward to provide excellent care to patients during times when staffing has been challenged. This has involved supporting nursing roles and collaborating with new ward staff to develop good manual handling and build team unity. It is a privilege to work with such a kind and flexible team who work together to focus on providing compassionate care to patients and helping them to achieve their goals.

Both the service and the team have expanded in 2022 and I want to celebrate this across the Trust.

The speak up agenda is central to us developing a Just and Learning culture in the Trust and enhancing the psychologically safety of it's staff.

FTSU Guardians support Trust employees who have raised concerns that they feel have not been effectively dealt with by the Trust. FTSU Guardians will help to raise the profile of raising concerns and provide confidential advice and support to staff in relation to concerns they have about safety and/or the way their concern has been handled locally.

The FTSU Guardians also take time to identify and break down barriers to effective communication, in return making the Trust a more open and honest place to work.

The Exmouth Day Case Unit has just re-opened after being closed for 5 months due to the department being refurbished.

The Clinical ODP Manager of Exmouth Day Case Unit would like to say a massive thanks to the whole team for keeping going in very difficult circumstances. With the service now back up and running, they are very much looking forward to expanding our services. 

It is a very exciting time for day case services in Exmouth. It is expected that The Elective Recovery plan will bring better utilisation of all our new day case facilities. Using our Pre-Op Assessment team enables us to better engage the local community in their own healthcare. The Exmouth Day Case Team is committed to working towards an holistic approach to Day Case Surgery involving pre and post op care to include and empower our service users. We have a great team culture in Exmouth and pride ourselves on having a friendly, supportive and approachable outlook. It was this outlook that kept them together as a team throughout the recent 5 month redeployment.

Day 10 belongs to the Project SEARCH students!

Project SEARCH, which is a collaboration between the Royal Devon, Petroc, and Seetec Pluss employment agency, has been running at North Devon District Hospital for nine years and has helped 87% of its graduates into employment.

The highly successful internship program, which launched across our Eastern services on 1 November 2022, has dedicated time where interns will receive training and support before and after each day’s work placements.

The interns also receive on the job support from dedicated job coaches and complete three lots of ten-week placements, across a number of departments and services in the Trust.

Day 9 goes to the Community Cardiac Service Team! 

The Community Cardiac Service consists of both Inpatient and Community, Specialist Heart Failure and Specialist Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurses, all of whom deliver exceptional patient care across the Eastern services. The teams are not only dedicated to ensuring the very best for the health and wellbeing of their patients, but also provide a wonderfully supportive environment to each of their colleagues. The service is supported by a committed Admin team who have shown considerable flexibility and a proactive response to the continual growth and development of the service!

Day 8 belongs to the Eastern Community Services Pharmacy Team who consistently use their clinical knowledge and expertise to deliver high-quality personalised care to patients in both community inpatient units and to housebound patients in their own home. The team are central to improving patient safety; reducing the use of potentially harmful polypharmacy in people with frailty; help people to manage their own medication regimes independently and are integral to discharge preparation.

This cheerful team works collaboratively across all interfaces to provide integrated care to our caseload whilst supporting many other teams with medicines-related enquiries.

The PALS Team are a dedicated team that work so hard all year round to deal with complaints, queries, and various different issues that both patients and families may have.

They listen to and provide confidential advice and support and try to resolve any concerns as quickly as possible. It is a stressful role they do every day but they are a hugely professional, dedicated and compassionate team, not only dealing with phone calls and letters but opening their doors to the public.
No matter how busy they are, they will always have a smile and time to Listen.

"The Renal Community Team are a wonderfully dedicated and compassionate team to work with. Their enthusiasm and care for their patients is second to none. The team look after patients in the community and their homes with kidney problems or on home dialysis therapies. Day to day, the service is always busy looking after patients whom have been on treatment for years and those starting their renal journey.

This friendly and supportive team of nurses and assisted practitioners are there every step of the way and are all true assets to the wider Renal department and the Trust. I want to thank them for all their hard work and support over what has been a tough year in many ways."

Lymphoedema is a chronic, debilitating condition that affects a patients mobility, body image and quality of life. We are a double act of 2 specialist nurses who share past experience, innovations and ideas to diagnose, support and deliver research based care according to their needs. We give our patients time to engage offering our time as needed. We complete a holistic assessment and provide a patient centred plan of care for inclusive patient partnership working that empowers patients to take control of their condition.

We are members of the Vocational Education Team based in the Northern Services! Our main role is to provide training and support to Healthcare Support Workers and helping them develop within their roles. We are empowering people to progress, achieve their goals and to create a positive workplace.This Christmas we would like to wish everyone a great time and to enjoy time with family and friends. When we are not at work we are planning to be taking long walks in the wintery but stunning North Devon coastline with our dogs, enjoying warm drinks and admiring Christmas decorations!

Royal Devon Festive Calendar day 2: End User Devices team (EUD - Eastern)

The End User Devices (EUD) Team are responsible for the wide range of IT equipment that the Trust relies on to operate effectively. Based at the main Wonford and Heavitree sites, the team work to make sure that our clients across the Trust are able to carry out their work as smoothly as possible.

Several months ago, the EUD Team played a very effective part in the merging of the RD&E and North Devon Trusts. Not only were they assisting North Devon staff in the commissioning and deployment of their new systems, the EUD Team were also maintaining their support duties across our Eastern sites.

Nick Rapson, one of the EUD Engineers based at Wonford said, “Our Team is the best it has ever been. We’re all here because we want the organisation to be as well-supported as it can be.”

This team received a nomination due to their extremely hard work this year in times of uncertainty and escalation, covering ED, MTU, AMU and the ACE service. They have continued to discharge patients’ in a timely manner; with 70% of medically fit patients in the emergency department returning home on following our assessment in September 2022. 

The team has continued to grow and they are now a well-established, OT, PT and Rehab Support Worker service, receiving lovely feedback from staff, relatives and patients such as:

“The therapy team were brilliant….120%”

“Can’t believe how supportive and helpful you were”.
