Will the service ever reopen?

Yes, when it is safe. We are working to ensure that this happens as soon as possible.

How long will the service be closed for?

We are unable to estimate a timeframe for when we will reopen because it is reliant on recruitment timeframes that are not in our control.

What will happen next?

Closing a service is never our first choice, and we will continue to explore other options. When we are sure that we have a safe level of staff, we can look at fully re-opening the unit.

We have spoken to over 300 pregnant women and birthing people, who are 34+ weeks pregnant, high risk or vulnerable, to discuss their plan and help them understand their options. If you have not received a call, please speak to your community midwife who can discuss your options.

We are mindful that many of our families live far away from North Devon District Hospital, and we will discuss with you how we can best support you - this will either be on the phone when we call you or at your next routine midwife appointment.
