The Minor Injuries Unit at Honiton Hospital will be temporarily closed from Friday 21 February to allow for the installation of new radiology equipment at Honiton. The service is moving temporarily to Ottery St Mary Hospital, where it will be available 7 days a week from 8am to 8pm. The X-ray service is also moving from Monday 24 February.

The MIU and X-ray service will return to Honiton Hospital once the improvement works are finished, expected in June 2025.

To help accommodate this move, musculoskeletal (MSK) services currently run at Ottery St Mary will now move to Honiton until June. Care teams are contacting patients to let them know if their appointments are affected. If you have any questions about an upcoming appointment, please contact your care team.

If you use the Trust’s MY CARE service, where appointments can be viewed digitally, you can check the location of any upcoming appointment on your phone or laptop.

The project to improve the X-ray room at Honiton Hospital involves a significant investment of over £500,000. The space is being refurbished to provide an improved environment for both patients and staff and all the current equipment is being replaced with new machines that use the latest technology.

The new fully digital equipment will produce superior quality images and lower patient radiation doses. Digitisation will also bring future improvements to efficiency and capacity to better support the MIU service, outpatients, and patients referred from local GPs.

Phil Luke, Director of Operations (Eastern) for the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust says, “Upgrading our X-ray equipment is essential to ensure the continued MIU service to the people of Honiton and the surrounding area. We apologise for the temporary inconvenience this causes and look forward to getting the new and improved radiology service back in Honiton as soon as possible.”

• Your GP can provide medical advice, examinations, prescriptions and routine care for illnesses and injuries that aren’t life-threatening.
• Please call 999 and attend an Emergency Department in a medical emergency, when someone is seriously ill or injured and their life is at risk.

The Ottery St Mary MIU service is open seven days a week, 8am to 8pm.

The X-ray service operates:

• Monday, Tuesday and Friday 9am to 5pm
• Wednesday 9am to 1pm
• Thursday 1.30pm to 5pm
