Latest update on the temporary suspension of birthing services at North Devon District Hospital - 2 October 2026
2 Oct 2026
We are committed to keeping women, birthing people, families and our communities informed about the temporary suspension of birthing services at North Devon District Hospital (NDDH).
To provide the very latest information following our regular readiness assessments, we will now publish these updates every two weeks.
Latest update at a glance:
Following our latest maternity readiness assessment on Monday 28 September, birthing services at North Devon District Hospital remain temporarily suspended.
We now have a full Tier 2 (registrar) rota in place and are currently completing induction, onboarding and competency assessments for newly recruited staff. We continue to have consultant vacancies and are working to recruit to these posts. We remain committed to reopening birthing services at NDDH as soon as it is safe to do so.
Since the temporary suspension began, 164 women and birthing people from North Devon have given birth at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (RD&E). There have been no confirmed safety incidents directly related to the temporary suspension.
Today's update includes the latest operational information, an update on progress towards meeting the criteria required for services to safely reopen, and details of where women, birthing people and families can find support and information.

Our dedicated web pages regarding the temporary suspension are regularly updated so please check them for the latest information.
