One Northern Devon (OND) has been shortlisted for the Place-based Partnership award at this year’s HSJ Awards, recognising outstanding contribution to healthcare and earning the opportunity to showcase its achievements on a national platform.
OND is made up of partners from the public sector, voluntary and community sector and private sector serving the population of Northern Devon. As well as an overarching OND board, there are also 'One Communities' in each of the seven towns in the locality, who are in themselves place-based partnerships on a smaller scale. This allows for a very local and targeted approach to tackling OND Devon's primary objective - reducing health inequalities. As well as championing 'Place', OND also champions 'Person' centred services through its innovative Flow programme and 'System' co-ordination.
OND was short-listed in the ‘Place-based Partnership’ category. This category was included in the awards in recognition that traditionally health, local government, voluntary and community sectors have operated in silos. The focus on population health and the integration of end-to-end care as well as the wider social determinants of health mean that relationships across, health, housing, public health, transport and environment across all sectors is vitally important. This has been the approach taken by One Northern Devon for more than five years.
Andrea Beacham, Programme Manager for One Northern Devon, said: “We’re delighted to see North Devon and Torridge recognised nationally by the panel of judges for partnership working. All of our One Northern Devon partners play a vital role – whatever organisation or sector they come from – when they come together at the One Northern Devon partnership meetings, there is a recognition that they are there primarily for the people or Northern Devon – and they put their organisational priorities second.”
She continued: “This is also equal recognition of our seven ‘One Communities’ who work in partnership – often giving their time for free - focussing on what matters to their community.”
HSJ editor Alastair McLellan, added: “On behalf of all my colleagues, it gives me great pleasure to congratulate One Northern Devon on being shortlisted as a finalist in the category of Place-based Partnership All of the applications represent the ‘very best of the NHS’ and often leave our esteemed panel of judges with an impossible choice!
“Following the thorough judging process One Northern Devon was shortlisted, ahead of the official awards ceremony to be held later this year (Thursday November 17 2022). Despite the tough competition, One Northern Devon really did stand out as a ‘success story’ worthy of a prized place on the panel’s shortlist. At this first stage of judging, the shortlist was based on ambition; outcome; value; involvement and working together and crucially, how the project might be “picked up” and replicated elsewhere for the benefit of both patients and professional colleagues.”
