Congratulations to Professor Kash Patel, Associate Professor and Consultant Physician in Diabetes and Endocrinology, who was a finalist for the Research Award at the Royal College of Physicians’ Excellence in Patient Care Awards 2026.

Genetic forms of diabetes affect around 10,000 people in England and can have significant health consequences if they remain undetected. Professor Patel’s work focuses on understanding the genetic basis of diabetes and translating these discoveries into improved patient care. His main research interests centre on the genetics of diabetes, with particular emphasis on monogenic diabetes and type 1 diabetes. He uses next-generation sequencing technologies and large datasets to improve the diagnosis and understanding of monogenic diabetes in humans.

These innovations are now used in routine NHS care, helping thousands of patients each year receive more accurate diagnoses and more personalised treatment, while reducing misdiagnosis and, in some cases, avoiding unnecessary life-long insulin therapy. His work has also improved genetic testing standards in the UK and internationally, making diagnoses more reliable and helping ensure that the benefits of genomic medicine are accessible to people from diverse backgrounds.

Professor Patel has previously been recognised with the European Journal of Endocrinology Award from the European Society of Endocrinology, the Niru Goenka Award from the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists, and Young Investigator Awards from Diabetes UK and the SGGD–EASD.
