Royal Devon colleague recognised in King’s Birthday Honours
16 Jun 2025
Carole Boulanger, Consultant Nurse and Advanced Critical Care Practitioner has been named an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the King’s Birthday Honours for services to Critical Care.
“It’s overwhelming and very humbling. I’m really honoured and grateful to have even been considered,” said Carole.

“This is the first time to my knowledge someone in the Advanced Critical Care Practitioner (ACCP) role has been recognised in this way and it’s wonderful to shine a light on the difference ACCPs make to intensive care unit teams, our patients and their families.”
Carole started her career as an intensive care unit (ICU) nurse and has remained actively involved in clinical care at the bedside as an Advanced Critical Care Practitioner (ACCP) for the last 20 years. She currently leads a team of ACCPs in Royal Devon and Exeter (Wonford) Hospital’s ICU.
Carole has played a pivotal role in the development of the ACCP career pathway, including Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FICM) membership status for ACCPs as a gold standard speciality credential for advanced practice. Carole sits on the FICM board representing ACCPs and supporting others around the UK to develop the role. In 2024 she was elected to the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) as executive committee secretary.
The King’s Birthday Honours are announced in June each year. The OBE is awarded to individuals who have made a significant contribution in their community or field of work.
