Specialist neuro-rehabilitation service recognised for outstanding care
23 Sept 2026
The Royal Devon has welcomed the findings of the latest CQC inspection of Mardon Neuro-rehabilitation Centre, which has confirmed the service continues to be rated Good overall, with an Outstanding rating for Caring.
The specialist inpatient service supports people recovering from stroke, acquired brain injury and other complex neurological conditions, helping patients maximise their independence and quality of life through intensive multidisciplinary rehabilitation.
The assessment highlighted the expertise and dedication of staff and found patients and families consistently received compassionate, person-centred care. Inspectors heard examples of staff going above and beyond to support patients and carers, building strong relationships and tailoring rehabilitation to individual needs and goals.
The report also recognised improvements made since the previous inspection, including strengthened medical staffing, strong training compliance, effective multidisciplinary working and positive rehabilitation outcomes for patients.
Vanessa Purday, Chief Medical Officer said: "We are delighted that the CQC inspection report recognises the outstanding compassion and professionalism shown by colleagues at Mardon every day.
"Neuro-rehabilitation can be life-changing for patients and families. This report reflects the dedication of our multidisciplinary teams and the difference they make in helping people recover, regain independence and return home."
The report identified challenges around delays in discharge for some patients who are ready to leave hospital but are waiting for support packages in the community. The Trust has already identified this as a priority area and continues to work closely with partners across health and social care to improve patient flow and reduce delays wherever possible.
The assessment confirms Mardon remains a high-performing specialist rehabilitation service providing high-quality care for patients from Devon and neighbouring areas.
