We know how important local maternity services are to families across Northern Devon and neighbouring communities. We continue to listen carefully to concerns about the temporary suspension of birthing services at North Devon District Hospital (NDDH).

We want to make sure that women and birthing people, families and the wider community have access to the latest, up to date and accurate information about the temporary changes, to the support being provided to women, birthing people and families impacted and on the progress being made to reopen birthing services as quickly as possible.

To help keep everyone informed we have pulled together an update covering the following key information:

• Temporary changes to birthing services at NDDH are now in place.

• Community midwifery services, antenatal care, scans and outpatient appointments continue in North Devon.

• As of Monday 17 August, 20 women and birthing people have had their babies at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (RD&E) since the temporary changes began, with no reported incidents.

• Additional financial support for eligible families affected by travel and accommodation costs has been introduced.

• A comprehensive information pack is available to support women, birthing people and their families.

• We are encouraging all women/birthing people to call us on our dedicated maternity triage line as soon as they think they are in labour or have any concerns – 01392 406 616. This number is 24/7.

• Work continues on a dedicated reopening programme to support the safe return of birthing services to North Devon.
