Temporary closure of the Ilfracombe Minor Injuries Unit
Due to numerous questions and correspondence received, we are publishing an update on the status of the Ilfracombe Minor Injuries Unit (MIU).
Whilst Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust previously delivered the MIU in Ilfracombe, it was necessary to temporarily suspend the service in 2020 in order to consolidate nurse staffing resource in the North Devon District Hospital (NDDH) Emergency Department to maintain safe staffing levels. Since then, we have continued to see vacancies in the Emergency Department, meaning it has not been possible to consider re-opening the MIU. In its place, the Devon ICB has instead commissioned a weekday minor injury service from Combe Coastal Surgery as well as a seasonal weekend service provided by First Care Ambulance and more latterly Alliance Pioneer Group. This weekend service ceased in early September 2025.
The future provision of Minor Injury Services in Ilfracombe forms part of the wider review of Devon’s Minor Injury Service/Urgent Treatment Centre provision being undertaken by the Devon ICB who are the commissioners of all urgent and emergency care across the county. This review has commenced and will include attendance volumes and benchmarking analysis of all MIU attendances across the full seven days of services, along with data for treatment at Emergency Departments, at GP practices and/or a pharmacy. The review will also include a detailed equality and quality impact assessment (EQIA) that will determine impacts from right across the system, including local data needs assessment, deprivation, transport, etc., and will support decision-making about the location for future services. As this progresses, we have been assured that Devon ICB will be looking to involve local stakeholders including the Trust, councillors, MPs and patient groups as part of their engagement on any future decision-making.
In the meantime, the Trust has committed to work with our public sector partners in Ilfracombe to develop the business case for a new Integrated Neighbourhood Health centre in Ilfracombe to replace the much loved but now outdated Tyrrell Community Hospital. This building is unable to be configured to deliver modern healthcare services due to its age, structure and quality of the building fabric.
Through our partnership forums and projects the Trust is significantly involved in aligning our services to meet the needs of the local population. Through the learning from civic and community commissioners on the Poverty Truth Commission; the probation pilot with the Ministry of Justice; the Council-led Ilfracombe Task Force and the NHS England Coastal Navigator programme, we have gained a deep understanding of these needs and the co-ordinated efforts required to tackle the root causes of deprivation in one of the most isolated rural communities in England. We therefore support any and all commissioning of service which supports an improvement in the community of Ilfracombe’s health, wellbeing and access to opportunity and healthcare.
