Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (Wonford) is our largest hospital in the Trust, where many of our acute clinical services are based, including our Emergency Department and a number of highly acclaimed specialist units and centres.
As a teaching hospital, it delivers undergraduate education for a full range of clinical professions. We are the lead partner for the University of Exeter College of Medicine and Health and a leading centre for high quality research and development in the South West peninsula.

The hospital is based on a large site, housing many of our acute clinical services and specialist centres. The main hospital building is home to many of our acute services and wards.

Park and Ride
Our park and ride service offers a convenient and easy alternative to driving and parking at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (Wonford) site. Simply park for free at the Sowton Park and Ride site and buy your ticket onboard the PR3/SPR3 bus.
The Sowton Park and Ride site is located on Sidmouth Road, near Junction 30 of the M5, to the east of the city. The postcode is EX2 5GL and its location is highlighted on the map below.

The buses go directly to the Wonford site, stopping at the RILD (Research Innovation Learning & Development) building, the RD&E Hospital's main entrance, and the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre (PEOC). The buses also stop at the Digby Park and Ride site, which provides parking for staff only.
The Park and Ride is one of the most cost-effective forms of transport, with an adult return costing £2 (£1.50 single) and a child return costing £1 (80p single).
A return ticket is only £1.50 for all English National Concessionary Travel Scheme (ENCTS) pass holders.
Public transport
The hospital is easily accessible using public transport and other sustainable means of travel.
We are well served by local bus routes, from across Devon. A number of services stop at the hospital, whereas others require a connection with a local bus route from Exeter City Centre.
Both the main Exeter train stations, St Davids and Exeter Central, are around three miles from the hospital and are served by buses that travel directly to our site.

Walking
The hospital site is around one and a half miles from Exeter City centre and takes approximately 30 minutes on foot.
Bikes
Bike paths run throughout Exeter and the hospital site is easily accessible by bike. Bicycle parking is available across the site, particularly outside the main hospital entrance.
Car parking
Car parking on site is limited, with a number of paid car parks, which are highlighted on the map of our car parks. We encourage visitors to use public transport and other sustainable means of travel whenever possible (see the sections above for details).
Under section 7 of the Health and Medicines Act 1988 Hospitals were permitted and encouraged to introduce Income Generation schemes, to fund their services.
Our patient and visitor car parks are controlled by Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras (ANPR), which will capture vehicle registrations on entry. Users simply enter their registration at the car park terminal when they return to their cars at the end of their hospital visit, and pay for the time used. Payment can be made with cash, card or contactless, or via mobile phone app. Please note the payment machines do not give change.
Car registrations are recorded only for the purposes of car park charging, and are used in compliance with Data Protection laws.

Entitled to free parking?
Blue Badge holders: Simply take your Blue Badge to a reception desk on entering the hospital, and your vehicle registration will be registered for free parking. You will not need to do anything further on leaving the car park.
Next of kin or registered carer for those with long-stay relatives: Speak to the team on the ward and they be able to help for suitable arrangements to be put in place.
Registered carers with a Devon Carers card: Present your card to a reception desk on entering the hospital, and your vehicle registration will be registered for free parking.
Patients admitted directly from ED or clinics: The ward team will arrange this for you.
Volunteers and volunteer drivers: Our volunteer coordinator will arrange this for you.
Parents of children (under 18) who are an inpatient at hospital overnight: Register your vehicle at reception or at Bramble ward.
Resident parent/parents whose babies are being cared for in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: Speak to the team on the unit and they will arrange this for you.
Patients visiting on a regular basis for treatment i.e. Oncology, Haematology, Renal and Diabetes departments: When you attend your department reception as normal, please give the reception staff your vehicle registration number and vehicle details and they will add your vehicle to the exemption list.
Relatives and registered carers of patients being cared for on the end-of-life care pathway: Speak to the ward team and they will arrange this for you.
Some patients in receipt of certain state benefits may be entitled to a refund of their parking costs and travel expenses. Visit our general office to find out more.

Eating & drinking
TLC Restaurant (open to patients, visitors and staff)
Our hospital restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It serves a wide range of healthy and nutritious food, including; fresh homemade hot meals and deserts, a range of cold buffet items including salads, sandwiches and sweet pastries, and beverages.
Situated in Area D, on Level 2, it is open from 7.30am - 7.45pm, 7 days a week.
Meals are served at the following times:
- Breakfast - 7.30am to 11am
- Lunch - 11.45am to 2.15pm
- Afternoon Snacks – 2.15pm to 5pm
- Supper - 5pm to 7.30pm
Savour Coffee Shop (open to patients, visitors and staff)
Our Savour coffee shop is open for hot & cold breakfast items, a wide variety of snacks, sandwiches, paninis and sweet pastries as well as a range of hot & cold beverages.
- Monday to Friday: 7am - 8pm
- Weekends: 9.30am - 4.30pm
You can eat-in or takeaway and we have additional outdoor seating in a courtyard.
Fine fillings (open to patients, visitors and staff)
We have three a la carte sandwich bars on the Wonford site, serving a wide range of freshly made sandwiches and baguettes (made to order), baked jacket potatoes, pasties, cakes and a selection of hot & cold beverages.
These can be found at the following locations and are open Monday to Friday:
- Main Entrance, Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (Wonford): 11am - 3.30pm
- Main Foyer, RILD: 8am - 5pm
- Main Entrance, Child & Women’s Health: 8am - 5.30pm
Cafés (open to patients, visitors and staff)
We also have two smaller cafés on the Wonford site which offer a selection of sandwiches, pasties, cakes as well as hot and cold drinks.
These can be found at the following locations and are open Monday to Friday:
- Waterside, Medical Outpatients: 9am - 4pm
- Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre Outpatient area: 9am - 4pm
Vending machines
There are a number of vending machines located across the site offering a selection of healthy food & drinks.
Shopping
Elf Charity Shop
This has small items for purchase and a café area. It can be found in the Waterside area, in Medical Outpatients, Level 1.
Pharmacy
Boots (open to patients, visitors and staff)
Provides a safe, high quality, and person-centred outpatient pharmacy service for patients, visitors and staff. Expert pharmacists and technicians are there to dispense medicines on behalf of the Trust and share their professional advice. Boots onsite services include:
- The dispensing of outpatient prescriptions
- Pharmacy advice regarding medications
- A wide range of over-the-counter medicines
- A range of retail products including sandwiches and essential toiletries
- Expert advice around a range of community pharmacy services
Boots can be found on Level 1, P Template. It is open at the following times:
• Monday to Friday 9am – 6pm
• Saturday 9am – 1pm
• Sunday Closed
Please note the Boots UK Hospital Outpatient Pharmacies are only able to dispense prescriptions from the Trust. For all other prescription types please ask a member of the Boots team for assistance.
