Family history service

Our team looks after people who could be at an increased risk of breast cancer because of a history of the disease or related cancers in their family.

We carry out genetic risk assessments to try to determine whether there could be a hereditary factor which puts you at an increased risk of developing cancer. We can help you to understand what this might mean for you and your wider family.

You might be referred to the Clinical Genetics Service, where they can offer more detailed genetic testing. Other people might need closely monitoring through scans or tests in hospital, such as a mammogram or MRI scan.

Some of our patients have a known genetic change, which increases their risk of developing a breast (or related) cancer. We help support them to make decisions about managing their risk. This could involve having risk reducing surgery and/or frequent surveillance scans.
