Maternity Triage

You can call the Maternity Triage team any time, day or night, if you have urgent worries about your pregnancy or your baby. Important – When to Call Us

Please call your midwife (before 28 weeks) or the maternity unit straight away (day or night) if:

  • Your baby is moving less than usual
  • You can’t feel your baby move
  • Your baby’s movements feel different than normal

Do not wait – even if it’s the middle of the night.

Call: 01392 406616

(This is for both the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital and North Devon District Hospital.)

You can call triage:

  • After 12 weeks if you're using Eastern services
  • After 18 weeks if you're using Northern services

Your midwife or doctor may also ask you to go to triage if they think you or your baby need to be checked.

If you are less than 12 weeks (Eastern) or less than 18 weeks (Northern) and need urgent help, please call your GP (doctor).

For non-urgent questions or things not about your pregnancy, talk to your GP or midwife team.

What Happens at Triage

When you arrive:

  • You should be seen by a midwife within 15 minutes
  • People are seen in order of how urgent their problem is — not by who arrived first
  • You may be asked to wait in the waiting area after you have been seen by the midwife. Like when you visit ED.

If your pain or symptoms get worse while you are waiting, tell a staff member straight away.

You will be seen by a midwife, and if needed, also by a doctor.
