Care after your baby Is born (postnatal care)

After your baby is born, our midwives, doctors and healthcare staff will help take care of you.

If everything is okay, we will make sure you feel confident with feeding and caring for your baby before you go home.

If you or your baby need to stay in hospital, we will make sure you both get the best care.

If you are both well, you may be able to go home after a few hours. Our team will help you start feeding your baby and answer any questions you have.

If you need to stay longer, you will go to the postnatal ward.

If your baby needs extra care, they may go to the Neonatal Unit (NNU), or Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) where specially trained staff will look after them.

Our care doesn't stop when you leave the hospital. A community midwife will visit you at home, usually within 24 hours. They will plan more visits over the next 10 days to support you and your baby.

If you need urgent advice or think you or your baby are unwell then please contact the maternity triage on 01392 406616
