Bone Densitometry (DXA)
DXA or DEXA stands for Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry. A DXA scan measures bone density.
The DXA scanner uses X-rays to measure your bone density in order to assess whether you have osteoporosis. It is a painless procedure that uses very low levels of radiation. For the scan you will be required to lie on a flat bed while an arm scans slowly over the top of you. The scan is done on the lower back and both your hips, unless you have hip replacement or metal screws in your back. Patients under the age of 20 will have their entire body scanned.

Requesting copies of your scans
If you would like copies of your images on disc, please download and complete a Data Protection Act form. Please visit the 'Accessing your Medical Records' page for more information.
Once the signed form is returned to the department, we will process your request - this can take up to 30 days. There is no charge for this service.
