Vascular Ultrasound
This test uses ultrasound to produce images of blood vessels throughout the body. It is a safe and effective way to assess the blood flow in the arteries or veins. The test is painless and does not use any radiation or needles. There are no risks associated with ultrasound.
The procedure is carried out by a clinical vascular scientist, who then puts together a detailed report. The report includes stored images with velocity flow measurements.

The vascular ultrasound test will give detailed images of your arteries and veins and the blood flow through them. This helps doctors to diagnose your condition and decide the best treatment.
One scientist will do the test, but other members of our team may be present.
You might be asked to lie on the couch, remain in a standing position or be seated on a chair, depending on what type of assessment is required.
For lower limb scans and upper limb scans, you will be asked to take clothing off, otherwise clothes can remain on.
The scientist will put a clear, water-soluble gel on your skin to help the quality of scan images and enable the probe to slide over the area being examined. You will not feel any pain but you may feel some pressure because sometimes the probe needs to be pressed firmly against your skin to get a clear picture.
Noises representing the blood flow may be heard from time to time but this is normal.

Meet the team
We are a small team of two Clinical Vascular Scientists, who work as long practitioners responsible for the scan and the results.
We have a close affiliation with the Vascular Surgeons, stroke team, the West of England Eye Unit (WEEU), neurology, diabetic department and medical imaging.
We are supported by office staff who have a good understanding of the vascular service.
Information for healthcare professionals
We offer urgent carotid ultrasound scans as part of the Fast Track Stroke Service.
We do not offer a direct GP referral system as a rule. Please contact the department if you need any assistance. If a patient is suspected to have had a stroke or a TIA please refer them to the daily Fast Track Stroke Clinic. If a patient has signs of vascular disease please refer for an appointment with the vascular surgeon.
Requesting copies of your scans
If you would like copies of your images on disc, please download and complete a Data Protection Act form. Please visit the 'Accessing your Medical Records' page for more information.
Once the signed form is returned to the department, we will process your request - this can take up to 30 days. There is no charge for this service.
