Fluoroscopy and interventional radiology
The department offers a multi-disciplinary approach to care, with radiologists, radiographers, nurses and support staff working together to ensure that patients undergoing diagnostic imaging have their dignity and integrity maintained. A wide-ranging digital imaging system and interventional service is provided, including X-ray, DXA, Ultrasound, MRI and CT Scanning.
Interventional radiology
Interventional Radiology (IR) is a sub-specialty of Radiology and refers to a range of minimally invasive procedures where Radiological image guidance (Fluoroscopy), Ultrasound (U/S), Computed Tomography (CT) is used to carry out diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures.
Interventional procedures performed here are:
- Angioplasty
- Nephrostomy
- Nephroureterostomy
- Ureteric stent insertion
- U/S and CT guided Biopsy and Drainage.
- Breast core biopsy
- Hysterosalpingogram
- Cystogram/Urethrogram
- Barium Swallow
- Water-soluble enema
- Fine needle aspiration.
- Percutaneous Trans-hepatic Cholangiogram
Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-pancreatography.
The Interventional Team consists of Radiologists, Nurses, Radiographers, Assistant Practitioners and Radiology Department Assistants. The team is supported by a team of receptionists and booking clerks who enable the system to run as smoothly as possible. We work between the hours of 8:00 to 5:00pm Monday to Friday.
Fluoroscopy
Fluoroscopy is a method of obtaining real-time moving images of internal structures in the body such as blood vessels, the stomach and bowels. Interventional procedures use fluoroscopy images to guide minimally invasive medical treatments or surgical procedures to provide diagnosis or treat a wide range of conditions.
Our fluoroscopy room is fitted with a Siemens Artis Zee and our interventional room is fitted with a Siemens Artis Q which both allow a wide variety of procedures to be undertaken; these include barium and contrast swallows and meals, contrast enemas, angiography, biliary, stenting and ERCP procedures, nephrostomy, cystography, temporary pacemaker insertions, joint injections and hysterosalpingogram (HSG) examinations for infertility.
There are also weekly inter-professional fluoroscopy sessions with the anaesthetic pain team, orthopaedic and speech and language therapy (SALT) departments.
