Neurophysiology

The nervous system sends signals around the body from the brain, controlling movement, body processes, and responses to the environment. The Central Nervous System (CNS) is the brain, spinal cord and nerves. Your Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) is the part of the nervous system that lies outside of the brain and spinal cord.

Neurophysiology studies the function of the central and peripheral nervous system, and part of this involves diagnosing and monitoring conditions of the brain and nervous system.

Our Neurophysiology department is part of a multidisciplinary team involved in promoting high quality of care for our patients. We provide this service at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (Wonford) and North Devon District Hospital, as well as in partnership with Torbay.

Who we are and what we do

Patients are referred to us from a wide range of departments including Neurology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, Psychiatry, Ophthalmology and directly from their GP.

We carry out investigations that record and analyse the electrical activity produced by the brain, nerves and muscles:

  • Electroencephalograms (EEG)
  • Evoked Potentials (EPs)
  • Nerve conduction studies (NCS)
  • Electromyography (EMG)
