The Orthopaedic department at North Devon District Hospital provides diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of conditions of the musculo-skeletal system involving bones, tendons, ligaments, tendons and joints. Services can be accessed by referral by your GP or an Emergency Department doctor.

Orthopaedic clinics are held at North Devon District Hospital and Bideford Hospital, Ilfracombe (Tyrell), Tiverton and Stratton Community Hospitals. There is also a special fracture clinic held at North Devon District Hospital daily in the afternoon.

Meet the team

The Orthopaedic team consists of 8 consultant surgeons, each with specialist training in their area of expertise, supported by a team of Associate specialist surgeons.

Joint replacement

The team at North Devon District Hospital perform over 350 joint replacements per year. These include Knee, Hip and Shoulder replacements. We work closely with some of the leading surgical implant companies and use the highest quality joint replacements with a proven track record of longevity backed up by the best available evidence. Our specialist theatres and ward are reserved for our Orthopaedic patients and kept separate from general hospital admissions. This, along with our region leading joint replacement recovery programme allows us to keep our complication rates significantly lower than the national average and our outcomes amongst the best in the region.

Foot and ankle

There are many common conditions that can cause pain in the foot and ankle or cause the shape of the foot or toes to change, either suddenly or over time. These conditions can have a significant impact on your quality of life and many can lead to arthritis in the future if left untreated. Our specialist foot and ankle team can provide advice, diagnosis and treatment including surgery for these conditions.

Knee

Our specialist knee team have experience in the treatment of a wide range of conditions affecting the knee. From sports injuries such as Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) ruptures, problems affecting the tracking of the kneecap and joint realignment procedures to prevent early arthritis, to partial and total knee replacement. We can provide specialist diagnosis and treatment for the patients of North Devon.
