Urologic conditions affect both men and women, but women might experience them differently. Some disorders, such as urinary incontinence (UI) and urinary tract infections (UTIs), are more common in women.
Our female urology specialists diagnose and treat a range of conditions, using the most up to date procedures.

Once your GP has referred you to the department we may refer you for tests prior to seeing the doctors, alternatively it may be that assessment and management may be undertaken by our specialist nurses in the bowel and bladder care department. This assessment may occur closer to home with our community team. The specialist nurses will assess you over a much longer appointment time and will look at conservative measures such as changing diet, fluid intake and pelvic floor assessment and advising on pelvic floor exercises.
We have a number of specialist clinics including joint clinics with Microbiologists for patients with recurrent and difficult to treat urinary tract infections. Patients with a condition called over active bladder that is not controlled by standard measures, this is run by Matron Mrs Soosie Cole and Mr Mark Stott consultant Urologist

Meet the team
Northern services
Our department has a specialist team of four Consultant Urologists (Mr Martin Moody, Mr Eng Ong, Mr Soumya Misra and Mr Mike Foster), two Specialty Doctors (Mr Faisal Khan and Locum Doctor), one Core Trainee, one Foundation Year-2 doctor, one Physician Associate, three Clinical Nurse Specialists, one Urology Support Nurse and a dedicated secretarial team.
We work very closely with the Eastern Urology and Oncology teams. Most of the urological conditions are seen and treated here in North Devon except for a few major surgical procedures and radiotherapy which are performed in Exeter.

Northern services
You will normally be referred to the service by a healthcare professional e.g. GP, and you will be seen in one of our outpatient clinics. The outpatient clinics are held at North Devon District Hospital, Bideford, Holsworthy, Ilfracombe and South Molton Community Hospitals.

Services and treatments
We offer a range of treatments to help female patients, including:
Focused Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy
After initial assessment we can offer referral to the physiotherapists for individual sessions with the team of pelvic floor experts in the hospital
Botulinum Toxin Bladder injections
This is utilised in patients in whom lifestyle changes and oral medications have failed to control the symptoms of an overactive bladder. Botulinum toxin works by temporarily paralysing small areas of your bladder, making it less sensitive / stopping it from working so hard.
Sacral Nerve Stimulation
One of the available treatments for an overactive bladder is Sacral Nerve Stimulation therapy. This involves placing small electrodes into the back where the bladder nerves are. Electrical impulses then stimulate the nerves and this can help reduce the symptoms of overactive bladder. The electrodes are attached to a small device that can be inserted under the skin. The device can be taken out at any time
