Becoming a Healthcare Scientist at the Royal Devon
If you have previous experience
If you have at least three A-Levels or equivalent, one of the routes you can pursue is through the NHS Practitioner Training Programme. This leads to an approved and accredited degree in one of five themes of healthcare science including Clinical Engineering, Medical Physics, Pathology Sciences, Neurosensory Sciences and Cardiovascular, Respiratory and Sleep Sciences. We have a huge range of specialties to give you the experience you need whilst studying.
NHS Scientist Training Programme
We can support you through the NHS Scientist Training Programme (STP) if you are a science or engineering graduate. This route means you can train as a Clinical Scientist. This covers Clinical Bioinformatics, Life Sciences, Physiological Sciences and Physical Sciences and Biomedical Engineering. You’ll need a 1st or a 2:1 in a relevant degree to apply for a place. You’ll be employed on a fixed-term contract and paid a salary over the three-year programme.
Remember, not all specialisms are available every year through the NHS Scientist Training Programme.
Other routes into Healthcare Sciences
There are many routes to a career in healthcare science. These include roles that don’t require any prior experience such as Band 2 Healthcare Science Assistants, where you’ll receive all your training on the job. As you gain qualifications and experience, you can advance to being a Band 4 Healthcare Science Associate.
