Pharmacists

Pharmacists work alongside pharmacy technicians to make sure all medication is carefully managed from admission to discharge. The majority of our inpatient wards will be visited daily by a clinical pharmacist, who will work alongside doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals to make sure our patients receive the right medication and dosage for their individual needs. This also includes careful consideration of previous medication taken at home, contraindications, and relationships between simultaneous drug therapies.

Emily Dellipiani - Specialist Pharmacist
Emily Dellipiani - Specialist Pharmacist

During my foundation/preregistration year at the Royal Devon in 2018, I explored a diverse range of specialist medical and surgical disciplines. I further developed my understanding in these areas during my time as a band 6 pharmacist. In 2020 the trust supported me to complete a post-graduate clinical diploma and progress to a band 7 clinical pharmacist. By 2021 I had developed a specialist interest in parenteral nutrition and again with the trust’s support, undertook the independent prescribing course.

I am currently working in a secondment post as the band 8 specialist pharmacist for gastroenterology & nutrition. As part of this role I actively participate in multi-disciplinary inpatient ward rounds to clinically review patients with intestinal failure and prescribe parenteral nutrition as well as medications to improve outcomes. On the gastroenterology ward, I support medical and nursing staff to resolve medication-related problems to promote the safe and effective use of medicines. I also work closely with specialist nurses and gastroenterology consultants to support the use of biological therapies in the management of inflammatory bowel disease.

This specialist post has given me the opportunity to provide leadership, management and mentorship for training pharmacists and technicians. It is especially rewarding to work with the foundation/pre-registration pharmacists and hopefully inspire them to work at the Royal Devon where they can flourish in a fulfilling and rewarding career.

I am proud to be a part of the pharmacy team at the Royal Devon. We are a friendly and approachable group of professionals with respect for each other’s specialities, roles and responsibilities. We can depend on each other to work through problems where information is lacking or medical opinion differs. This has been my experience from starting as a band 5 pre-registration pharmacist all the way through to my current role.

The Royal Devon provides a rich array of opportunities, valuable experience and career development opportunities in keeping with the evolving role of the pharmacist. If that resonates with you, the Royal Devon could be an excellent fit.

Heather Clarke - Rotational Pharmacist
Heather Clarke - Rotational Pharmacist

I'm currently a Rotational Band 6 Clinical Pharmacist and I've secured a Band 7 post following a successful interview. I've participated in a wide range of rotations through my band 6 and preregistration rotations which have included cross-sector rotations as well as inpatient rotations such as surgery, oncology, radiopharmacy and aseptic services. I also participate in dispensary rotations, late nights and on-call shifts.

I completed my A-Levels in biology, chemistry and sociology and went on to study a Masters of Pharmacy at University of Bath. Following completion of my Oriel application, I started my preregistration training year at the Royal Devon and have remained here throughout my early years as a junior pharmacist.

We have a friendly department where everyone is willing to help, regardless of what team they are in. And I love living in Devon - the local attractions, beaches and outdoor activities make living here very pleasant!
