Pharmacists

Pharmacists work alongside pharmacy technicians to make sure all medication is carefully managed from admission to discharge. The majority of our inpatient wards will be visited daily by a clinical pharmacist, who will work alongside doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals to make sure our patients receive the right medication and dosage for their individual needs. This also includes careful consideration of previous medication taken at home, contraindications, and relationships between simultaneous drug therapies.

Henry Goss - Clinical Pharmacy Manager
Henry Goss - Clinical Pharmacy Manager

I began my career with the Royal Devon as a trainee pharmacist at North Devon District Hospital. When I first arrived in Barnstaple from Swansea, I didn’t know a soul, but I quickly discovered a welcoming and supportive environment that set the stage for my future pharmacy career.

The trust’s dedication to nurturing talent became apparent early on. At the end of my training year, I was immediately offered a band 6 position. I was able to embark on the clinical diploma at my choice of university straight after qualifying. As I continued to grow professionally, I progressed further to a band 7 pharmacist, where I had the opportunity to delve deeper into the different specialties I’d experienced in my previous rotational role. During this time, the trust supported me in completing my independent prescribing course in rheumatology, which enabled me to specialise.

Now, having progressed into pharmacy management, I have the opportunity to shape pharmacy services across the organisation and develop our team to meet the needs of the local population. Studying for an MSc in health informatics has also been invaluable. Equipped with this knowledge, I am able to lead trust-wide technological changes to enhance how we use our electronic prescribing system.

Beyond my professional achievements, North Devon has offered me and my wife a lifestyle that we couldn’t have imagined elsewhere. We’ve embraced the area’s natural beauty which allows us to connect with nature and recharge outside of work. Barnstaple also has a vibrant music scene and I’ll frequently be found at local jazz nights, showcasing my skills on the flute and bass guitar.

Pharmacists seeking both professional growth and personal fulfilment will find the Royal Devon at North Devon District Hospital to be an ideal choice.

Emily Dellipiani - Specialist Pharmacist
Emily Dellipiani - Specialist Pharmacist

During my foundation/preregistration year at the Royal Devon in 2018, I explored a diverse range of specialist medical and surgical disciplines. I further developed my understanding in these areas during my time as a band 6 pharmacist. In 2020 the trust supported me to complete a post-graduate clinical diploma and progress to a band 7 clinical pharmacist. By 2021 I had developed a specialist interest in parenteral nutrition and again with the trust’s support, undertook the independent prescribing course.

I am currently working in a secondment post as the band 8 specialist pharmacist for gastroenterology & nutrition. As part of this role I actively participate in multi-disciplinary inpatient ward rounds to clinically review patients with intestinal failure and prescribe parenteral nutrition as well as medications to improve outcomes. On the gastroenterology ward, I support medical and nursing staff to resolve medication-related problems to promote the safe and effective use of medicines. I also work closely with specialist nurses and gastroenterology consultants to support the use of biological therapies in the management of inflammatory bowel disease.

This specialist post has given me the opportunity to provide leadership, management and mentorship for training pharmacists and technicians. It is especially rewarding to work with the foundation/pre-registration pharmacists and hopefully inspire them to work at the Royal Devon where they can flourish in a fulfilling and rewarding career.

I am proud to be a part of the pharmacy team at the Royal Devon. We are a friendly and approachable group of professionals with respect for each other’s specialities, roles and responsibilities. We can depend on each other to work through problems where information is lacking or medical opinion differs. This has been my experience from starting as a band 5 pre-registration pharmacist all the way through to my current role.

The Royal Devon provides a rich array of opportunities, valuable experience and career development opportunities in keeping with the evolving role of the pharmacist. If that resonates with you, the Royal Devon could be an excellent fit.
