Acute medicine

Acute Medicine is the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of people with urgent care needs who come to us via the Emergency Department, through a GP referral or by a transfer from another hospital.

Both of our main hospitals have dedicated departments that specialise in acute care. The Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (Wonford) has the Acute Medical Unit (AMU), the Medical Triage Unit (MTU) and the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit. The North Devon District Hospital sees patients in the Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) and in the ambulatory assessment area on the King George V Ward.
