Pharmacy - Eastern services
The pharmacy team screens prescriptions and advises staff on the selection and use of medicines. This ensures that patients are treated safely and effectively with the most appropriate medicines.
We dispense medicines for inpatients, outpatients and patients on discharge. We also provide information for patients on how to manage their medicines, to help ensure that optimal treatment can be continued at home.
Specialist injectable medicines, including chemotherapy drugs for cancer patients, are prepared in our aseptic unit on a daily basis.
Inpatients
If you are due to stay in hospital, please bring your current medicines in their original packaging with you, so the team looking after you are aware of any medicines that you are taking.
During your stay, your ward pharmacist will be available to discuss any questions or concerns you may have about your medicines.
When you leave hospital, we will provide you with a minimum of two-weeks' supply of the medicines that you need. If there are any changes to your medicines, we will let your GP know, so you will be able to get further supplies from your practice.
Outpatients (Boots Pharmacy)
We work in partnership with Boots to provide a high-quality outpatient dispensing pharmacy service, with a team of expert pharmacists and technicians who dispense medicines on behalf of the RD&E and provide professional advice.
NHS prescription charges apply, so if you are exempt or have a pre-payment certificate, please bring evidence of this with you. Boots is only able to dispense RD&E outpatient prescriptions. For all other prescription types, please ask a member of the team for assistance.
The Boots Pharmacy is open 9am-6pm, Monday to Friday, and 9am-1pm on Saturdays. It also offers a wide range of over-the-counter medicines, as well as a range of retail products.
Aseptic services
Our Aseptic Unit prepares specialist injectable medicines, including chemotherapy drugs, parenteral nutrition bags, eye injections and other intravenous products.
These medicines must be prepared extremely carefully under sterile conditions, to reduce the risk of infection and to ensure they meet patients’ exact needs and are of the quality required to be safely administered.
Meet the team
The pharmacy team is made up of a variety of professionals including, but not limited to, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacy assistants. Each member of the team plays a different but vital part to ensure that you receive your medicines safely and in a timely manner.
