Following the announcement of the New Hospital Programme Review by the Chancellor of the Exchequer in July 2024, the Terms of Reference for the review have now been agreed with the Chief Secretary of HM Treasury. The paper details which schemes will form part of the review and includes North Devon District Hospital.
In response, the Royal Devon’s Chief Executive Officer, Sam Higginson, said:
“We welcome the Government’s ongoing commitment to the New Hospital Programme (NHP) and the further detail about how the upcoming review will be undertaken.
“We are pleased that the programmes will be reviewed based on risk and deliverability. We have spoken publicly about the risks to our estate which has been shown on the national NHSE backlog reporting to be comparable to the RAAC hospitals. In response we have proposed a phased approach to redevelopment to enable us to make the best use of any investment that becomes available with delivery of the most critical estate replacement before 2030.
“Whilst the review is underway, we will continue to work closely with the NHP team on our enabling works, in particular our new staff accommodation on site which will boost recruitment and retention levels, which is crucial to delivering a sustainable local service into the future.
“We have committed to build a better hospital in North Devon so that the most remote hospital in mainland England can continue to meet the healthcare needs of the local population for years to come. We look forward to the clarity that this Government review will bring to help us move from planning to delivery.”
