Residential and respite care

Respite care means taking a break from caring, while the person you care for is looked after by someone else.

This is a positive way to protect your own health and wellbeing, whilst the person you care for is temporarily supported by health care professionals either within their own home or within a community care setting. This could be for a few hours, or for a longer stay to give you time to rest and recharge.

There are lots of respite care options, such as arranging for a volunteer to spend time with the person you look after for a few hours, or a short stay in a care home. Arrangements could be made for the person you care for to attend an activity group or day centre once a week, to give you a regular break from caring.

Reaching for Independence

Reaching for Independence is a Devon County Council initiative combining community-enabling team and day and respite services for people under 65 years.

The service is designed to increase independence and to improve skills where possible, such as accessing public transport, meeting friends, managing paperwork and creating manageable bill-paying systems, or using Assisted Technology. Individuals can also be supported to seek employment opportunities.

The service can also be offered in a building-based setting for a time-limited period for those who require more support.
