Bramble Children and Young People’s Unit

We are based at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (Wonford).

Bramble Children and Young People's Unit specialises in caring for babies, children and young people between the ages of 0-18 years old. Patients’ who are over 16 and up to 18 (until their 18th birthday) are offered the choice to be cared for on Bramble or an Adult ward. 

From Monday 29 January 2024, you will need to access Bramble Unit by going through Level 1, Area G and not via the usual entrance. This is due to building work. Clear signage will be in place to direct you to the temporary entrance, which is expected to be there for eight weeks.

Currently, our Bramble Unit is undergoing lots of exciting changes and improvements, in both layout and how we provide services, as we strive to always provide the best and most up-to-date care. 

The ward can be contacted anytime for the latest information, as the details below may vary based on developments. 

We have many areas within the Bramble Unit, including: 

Bramble High Dependency Unit

Here we care for children of all ages who require close observation and monitoring. It has a 4 bed maximum capacity including a cubicle. 

Bramble Blue and Green

Blue and Green team has 26 beds in bays and cubicles and care for patients with a wide variety of medical, surgical and oncology conditions. 

Bramble Yellow

Bramble Yellow has 6 beds which care for children pre and post operatively and day case procedures. 

Paediatric Day Case Unit

Bramble day case runs week days from 8am to 6pm and is accessed via Paediatric Outpatients, Level 1, Area J. 

The Day Case Unit provides care and treatment for children and young people that can be delivered in a day. This means you get to go home the same day as your care. 

Paediatric Oncology Day Case Unit

Open from 9am to 5pm weekdays, for children to attend for day case treatments, supportive care and follow-up reviews.

Security

The safety of children is paramount. The doors to the unit are always closed and locked and a secure entry system is in use. Access can be obtained using the intercom system at the right of the door.

Our team

Our experienced and friendly team of specialist children's doctors (paediatricians) nurses, therapists, healthcare assistants, play specialists and other staff provide safe and effective care for our young patients and their families. 

We have 24 consultant paediatricians, supported by a team of junior doctors and approximately 90 nurses, who work in partnership with families, children and young people to provide safe and effective healthcare.

Supporting you

We provide the following facilities to support the wellbeing of our patients and families during their time on Bramble Ward.

Play

The Play Service provide a range of toys and activities for children and young people of all ages and stages of development. Play is currently provided at the bedside and Play Specialists are available for provide support for patients who require distraction during, or preparation in advance of any procedures.

Learning

School is available for all children in hospital for three days or more, during term time from 9-11.30am and 1.30-3.30pm. Please visit www.devonhospitalschool.org.uk to find out more about the service. 

Parent facilities

We encourage parents to stay with their child and want to make your time with us as comfortable as possible. One parent is welcome to stay overnight and a bed will be provided next to your child. Parents of children in the High Dependency Unit will be allocated an area within Bramble Unit to rest. 

Breakfast is provided for all resident parents and all meals are provided for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. Water fountains are available throughout the unit and hot beverages are available. Please ask your child’s nurse if you would like a hot drink. Parents can use the bath and shower rooms within Bramble Unit.
