Supporting you
Devon Hospitals’ Short Stay School (DHSSS) helps children and young people aged 4 to 16 who are in hospital and cannot go to their usual school. DHSSS is run by Devon Local Authority and has a great team of teachers and helpers.
If a child needs lessons while at the Royal Devon, they will be supported by our play specialist who helps children get online for lessons by setting up iPads. Using digital technology some children can join their school lessons online and work on educational websites.
If a patient requires on-going education face to face, a teacher from DHSSS will provide this. Lessons are usually between 9:15–12:00 and 1:15–3:15. Teachers make sure the learning matches what the child would do at their own school. Most of all, learning on Caroline Thorpe ward is fun! To find out more, visit the Devon Hospitals’ Short Stay School website.
