Satellite haemodialysis
There are six satellite units linked to the RDUH , which can provide expert haemodialysis care nearer to the patient’s home. Units at Heavitree, Torquay and Honiton are run by RDUH. Units at Taunton, Bridgewater and Barnstaple are partnerships between the trust and a private specialist renal company. All are overseen by the nephrologists (kidney doctors) based at the RDUH.
Patients attend the unit closest to their home address. The units vary in size having between 8 and 24 stations all providing haemodialysis treatment for patients closer to their home, mostly with 3 treatment sessions per day, one in the morning, afternoon and evening. Each patient normally attends 3 times per week in their own specific time slot either Monday, Wednesday, Friday or Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday.
All the satellite units except Taunton offer holiday haemodialysis. This can be booked by requesting dates and sending a recent clinic letter to email rduh.holidayhaemo@nhs.net.
Home haemodialysis team (HHD)
We offer renal education, home haemodialysis training and support, including advice on how to set up the machine, connection/disconnection, monitoring of treatment and vital signs.
We also provide information regarding the positive results of frequent dialysis with the independence and ownership patients feel. Other benefits include reduced travel to and from hospital and reduced fluid and dietary restrictions. The responsibility of choosing this kind of treatment can be daunting but rest assured all the help and support is available for you.
